Race Day Operations

Course Marshal High Priority

You must be 16-99 years old to volunteer for this task.

Course Marshals will be used at each intersection to direct runners in the correct direction and prevent traffic from entering the course. Please pick up all of your things needed for volunteering either November 20th- 22nd at the Rescue Mission! THIS IS REQUIRED! Thank you for your support of this awesome Roanoke tradition!

Flaggers

You must be 18-99 years old to volunteer for this task.

Details

Flaggers will be used at intersections that require traffic control. These volunteers will attend a VDOT-approved training to certify them as VDOT approved flaggers. This flagger certification will take place at a time and place to be determined and will be valid for 4 years. On race day, you will use your flagger certification to direct traffic and to direct runners in the correct direction and prevent traffic from entering the course. More information about training course: Sign up for this job to be contacted about training course options. Training courses consist of a total of about 1 hour. This includes watching a 30-minute video and taking/passing a 25-question test. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a VDOT flagger training certification card which is good for 4 years. We will offer one course on a weekend, one on a weekday evening, and one at lunchtime on a weekday.

Traffic Control at Parking Lots

You must be 18 or older to volunteer for this task.

Details

Volunteers will stand at entrances/exits of parking lots that could serve as a bypass to allow a vehicle on course. Volunteers will be responsible for letting vehicles park, but not allowing them on the course. They will direct cars to the proper exit to bypass the course.

Anti-Vehicle Barrier Attendant

Details

Volunteers will stand near the anti-vehicle Barriers and if an emergency vehicle needs to get through, the volunteer will let them through by disconnecting the chain.

Floaters

Details

Floaters are our go-to people in a pinch! When someone doesn't show up or we have an unexpected need arise, floaters are who we depend on. A willingness to do just about anything and flexibility is key. Thank you for your support of this awesome Roanoke tradition!

Water Station

At least 8 more volunteers needed.

Details

Water stop volunteers will be setting up and running a water station for both runners and walkers to stop and stay hydrated.

Finish Chute

Details

We need folks to direct runners and walkers as they finish through the finish chute, adorn participants with their finishers medal, and hand out water. Be ready to give out lots of smiles and high fives!Thank you for your support of this awesome Roanoke tradition!

Sweeper High Priority

This volunteer task is full.

Details

The sweepers are the two people in the very BACK of the walkers at the 9am start. They will walk behind the last walkers, picking up any trash left by racers and collecting course marshal flags and vests from the course marshals. They will pull a wagon to collect the flags and vests.

Location

Check in at Elmwood Park, you'll be walking the whole 3.1 mile route.

Info tent volunteers need to be well informed and have all the answers- because you'll be getting all the questions! We'll brief you on the lay of the land, all the answers to the questions that participants may be asking you, and more. Crowd Control
